BJP Condemns West Bengal Government After President Murmu's Venue Discontent
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 7 (NationPress) Following President Droupadi Murmu's expressed disappointment earlier today regarding the West Bengal government's decision to allocate a smaller venue for the 9th International Santal Conference in Gossaipur, Darjeeling district, where she was scheduled to be the chief guest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) labeled this incident as indicative of a "constitutional breakdown" within the state.
The event was originally set to take place at Phansidewa within the same district. However, due to the state administration reportedly denying permission for the event at Phansidewa citing security concerns, organizers were compelled to relocate the venue at the last minute to a lesser site in Gossaipur.
President Murmu voiced her dissatisfaction regarding the abrupt venue change and remarked that neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any Cabinet members had met her during her state visit, which she noted contradicts established traditions and protocols during presidential visits.
“I am uncertain why Mamata Banerjee appears so displeased with me. She is akin to my sister,” the President commented before departing the state.
In response to this situation, BJP’s IT cell head and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, characterized the occurrence as a clear sign of a total constitutional collapse in the state.
“The circumstances in West Bengal today reflect a complete disintegration of the constitutional framework under Mamata Banerjee's government. In a rare and unprecedented move, the Hon'ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, publicly expressed her disappointment regarding the inadequate preparations and protocol during her visit to Siliguri,” Malviya stated in a post on his social media account.
He expressed further astonishment that the state government had denied permission for the International Santali Conclave, where the President was set to be the chief guest, at the initially planned venue.
Malviya asserted that when a state administration chooses to overlook the dignity associated with the office of the President of India, it signifies not only administrative failures but also a collapse of constitutional decorum and governance.
“This is not merely an instance of discourtesy. It represents institutional disrespect and serves as yet another reminder of the chaos that governance in Bengal has devolved into,” Malviya added.
At the time of this report, there had been no official response from either the West Bengal government or the Trinamool Congress regarding the situation.
