Kolkata, March 7 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday following President Droupadi Murmu's dissatisfaction regarding the smaller venue designated by the West Bengal government for the 9th International Santal Conference held in Gossaipur, Darjeeling district, where the President was the chief guest.
During a sit-in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) at Esplanade East in central Kolkata, which commenced on Friday, CM Banerjee accused the BJP of misusing the President's office to tarnish West Bengal's reputation.
“What has the BJP done to the Constitution? It’s embarrassing to admit this. We hold the Hon’ble President in high regard, but it seems she has been used to promote the BJP’s political agenda. I regret this, Madam, for I respect you greatly. However, you have fallen into the BJP’s ploy,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Responding to the President's claim that the West Bengal government was intentionally blocking attendance at the International Santal Conclave, the Chief Minister insisted that such accusations were unfounded, as the state government was not the event's organizer.
“This was not a state-sponsored event. Our government was unaware of it. We only receive notifications about her arrival and departure. We strive to arrange things as best as we can. But if someone visits daily, how can I be present every single time? Don’t we have other responsibilities? If you come once a year, I’ll be there to welcome you. But if you visit 50 times a year, I simply cannot manage to attend every occasion,” Banerjee explained.
She further stated that she was unable to meet the President due to her participation in the anti-SIR demonstration, which she deemed crucial for the public's welfare.
“The BJP might see you as their priority, but my priority lies with the common people,” the Chief Minister asserted.
CM Banerjee also addressed the President's earlier remarks concerning the lack of development for tribal communities in the state, questioning why the President had remained silent about the injustices faced by tribal individuals in Manipur.
“Why didn’t you raise your voice then? You stay silent while atrocities occur against tribal communities in other states. Why is West Bengal consistently targeted?” the Chief Minister questioned.
