Is Terrorism Truly the Enemy of Humanity? Gratitude to Ghana for Supporting India in the Fight Against Terror: PM Modi

Accra, July 3 (NationPress) During his inaugural bilateral visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in delegation-level discussions with President John Mahama. He emphasized that both nations share a consensus that "terrorism is a foe to humanity" and expressed gratitude for Ghana's support in India's efforts against terrorism.

The Prime Minister further indicated that India and Ghana are committed to enhancing mutual collaboration in counter-terrorism initiatives.

In addition to deliberating on development, economic prospects, and inclusive global governance with President Mahama, Modi highlighted the necessity for reforms within the United Nations.

Reiterating the foundational values of India-Ghana relations, PM Modi stated: "At the heart of our friendship lies shared ideals, collective struggles, and a vision for an inclusive future. The liberation movements in our nations have motivated many other countries. Ghana remains a robust democracy in West Africa, serving as a living inspiration for others..."

He added, "We discussed our collaborative visions for development, economic zones, and global governance. We are united in our stance against terrorism. I thank Ghana for their collaboration in our battle against this menace. We also concurred on the need for reforms within the United Nations... Mr. President, you are a cherished ally of India and well-acquainted with our nation. I extend an invitation to visit India, and I am optimistic about hosting you soon..."

"Our bilateral trade has surpassed $3 billion, with Indian investments nearing $2 billion across approximately 900 projects in Ghana. Today, we aim to double our trade within the next five years. In the fintech sector, India is eager to share its UPI digital payment experiences with Ghana. Our development partnership is pivotal to our collaboration. We assure President Mahama of India’s unwavering support in his economic revitalization endeavors..."

This visit is notable as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over thirty years.

During their discussions, Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama explored various facets of enhancing cooperation between India and Ghana across multiple sectors.

President Mahama remarked, "Our esteemed guest, PM Narendra Modi, will be awarded the prestigious National Award of the 'Order of the Star of Ghana' during the State Banquet."

Both leaders also participated in a joint press conference on Wednesday evening.

PM Modi expressed, "It was a profound honor that President Mahama personally welcomed me at the airport..."

President Mahama added, "Both nations are dedicated to deepening our economic and investment ties, especially during Ghana's current economic restructuring related to the debt treatment process and the ongoing IMF program. We plan to advance these discussions through diplomatic frameworks, including Foreign Office Consultations and the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation, to realize our partnership's goals for mutual benefit...."

He further noted, "This visit is especially significant as it represents the first phase of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Africa tour, culminating in the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Our discussions have been constructive in enhancing cooperation across various sectors of our economies, including agriculture, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, human resources, and health, among others..."

Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama also witnessed the signing of several MoUs and agreements aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation and strengthening India-Ghana relations.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi was received by President Mahama at the Jubilee House. This state visit marks the first such visit in three decades.

The leaders convened in both restricted and delegation formats, engaging in comprehensive discussions, the statement noted.

They agreed to elevate their relationship to a comprehensive partnership.

Both leaders reaffirmed the amiable and enduring ties between India and Ghana and explored avenues to expand collaboration in vital areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, capacity building, digital technology, infrastructure, and people-to-people connections.

They acknowledged the increasing bilateral trade and Indian investments in Ghana.

Additionally, they discussed reinforcing their defense and security partnership.

Both nations committed to enhancing their development cooperation, particularly through India-supported infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives.

India offered to share its valuable experiences in health, pharmaceuticals, digital public infrastructure, UPI, and skill development.

The Prime Minister expressed India's strong commitment to advocating for the Global South and thanked Ghana for its solidarity on this front.

PM Modi also expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his care and attention towards the 15,000 strong Indian community residing in Ghana.

The two leaders discussed pressing global issues of mutual interest, including reforms in the UN.

PM Modi thanked President Mahama for his support and solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Both sides agreed to intensify their collaborative global efforts against terrorism.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Ghana on its advancing international profile, particularly its term on the UN Human Rights Council and the election of Ghana's Foreign Minister as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to democratic values, South-South cooperation, and a mutual vision for sustainable development and global peace.

Following the delegation-level talks, four MoUs were exchanged in the areas of Culture, Standards, Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine, and a Joint Commission Mechanism for engagement between Foreign Ministries.

President Mahama hosted a state banquet in honor of Prime Minister Modi.

Thanking him for his generous hospitality, PM Modi invited President Mahama to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
