New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa has faced a reprimand for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the inaugural ODI against South Africa.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday that Zampa was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the Code, which pertains to the “use of an audible obscenity during an international match.”
“Zampa has been assigned one demerit point to his disciplinary record, marking his first offence within a 24-month timeframe. Level 1 violations can result in an official reprimand, a potential fine of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” stated the ICC.
This incident occurred during the 37th over of South Africa's innings in their first ODI against Australia at the Cazalys Stadium in Cairns, when Zampa, aged 33, used inappropriate language following a misfield and an overthrow off his bowling, which was captured by the stump microphone and aired widely.
“An official hearing was unnecessary, as Zampa acknowledged his wrongdoing and accepted the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees,” the ICC added.
The opening ODI concluded with South Africa achieving a commanding victory by 98 runs, spurred by Keshav Maharaj’s remarkable performance of 5-33. Zampa managed to score 11 runs and finished with bowling figures of 1-58 for Australia.
While Australia secured a 2-1 victory in the T20I series, the Proteas made a strong comeback in the first ODI, now leading the three-match series 1-0. The second match is set to take place at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on August 22, followed by the final match at the same venue on August 24.
