Prayagraj, Aug 20 (NationPress) In a significant victory for Mau MLA Abbas Ansari, the offspring of the notorious gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, the Allahabad High Court has annulled his conviction related to a 2022 hate speech case, thereby restoring his Assembly membership.
On May 31, the MP-MLA Special Court in Mau sentenced Abbas to two years in prison and imposed a fine for delivering an inflammatory speech during the 2022 Assembly elections. His election agent, Mansoor, received a six-month prison term, while Abbas’s younger brother, Umar, was cleared of all charges. Both Abbas and Mansoor were fined Rs 2,000 each.
The hate speech incident traces back to March 3, 2022, during the campaign for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections when Abbas Ansari, a candidate for Mau Sadar, allegedly made provocative comments aimed at government officials.
A video of his remarks went viral, leading Inspector Gangaram Bind to file a complaint and initiate an FIR at the Mau Kotwali police station.
In his speech, Ansari indicated that if Akhilesh Yadav's government regained power in Uttar Pradesh, officials would face accountability prior to their transfers.
The Election Commission took note of these remarks and began investigations.
Following his conviction, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Secretariat quickly invoked Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, terminating Abbas's membership on June 1. They also recommended a by-election to the Election Commission.
