Shimla, Aug 30 (NationPress) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that the extent of devastation caused by this year's monsoon rains is significantly greater than that of 2023. On Saturday, he conducted an aerial survey over Bharmour, Manimahesh, and other areas in Chamba district, along with the Fatehpur and Mand regions of Indora in Kangra district, which faced severe impacts from the excessive water released from the Pong dam.
His journey commenced from the Pathankot air force station towards Bharmour, but adverse weather conditions prevented a landing, as noted by an official statement. During a media interaction in Chamba town, Sukhu remarked that, thanks to the precautionary measures taken by the current government, the loss of life has been considerably lower than the catastrophic events of 2023.
“However, the level of destruction is far greater. Infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, and communication services have all suffered significantly compared to 2023. This year, relentless rains, landslides, and cloudbursts have wreaked havoc across the entire state,” he added. The Chief Minister acknowledged that rehabilitation presents a daunting challenge for the government, but with the community's support, “we will tackle it valiantly. It is our duty to assist families who have been displaced, lost their livelihoods, and we will introduce a special relief package for them.”
CM Sukhu mentioned that Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh are actively assessing the situation on-site. “The government is dedicated to providing relief to those affected by the disaster and to evacuate individuals stranded due to washed-out roads en route to Chamba and Bharmour,” he affirmed.
He further conveyed that the Revenue Minister has made his way to Bharmour on foot from Chamba, highlighting the current government’s commitment to a humanitarian approach in addressing the crisis. The Chief Minister assured that efforts are ongoing to restore road connectivity.
On the evacuation of stranded individuals in the Bharmour region, he noted that it hinges on favorable weather conditions, although helicopters have been dispatched for this mission. CM Sukhu criticized BJP leaders for focusing on spreading rumors instead of supporting the affected populace.
He pointed out that the BJP is now calling for the adjournment of the ongoing monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha, whereas last year they were advocating for an extension of the session.
“The decision to suspend the Manimahesh yatra was made with the current weather conditions in mind, despite some individuals engaging in petty politics over this matter,” concluded the Chief Minister.
