Bhopal, March 9 (NationPress) Excited by the latest accolade, Madhya Pradesh has added another stripe to its record for conservation with the recognition of Madhav National Park as the state's ninth tiger reserve. This park has been a true sanctuary for these magnificent creatures for many years.

The state proudly holds the title of "Tiger State".

"Fantastic news for those who cherish wildlife! India is endowed with a rich wildlife diversity and a culture that reveres nature. We will continually lead efforts to protect animals and foster a sustainable planet," the Prime Minister expressed on his X handle.

In response, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav conveyed his gratitude to the Prime Minister: "Sincere thanks to the Hon'ble Prime Minister for your visionary guidance in designating Madhav National Park as India’s 58th and MP's 9th Tiger Reserve! Madhya Pradesh is honored to spearhead wildlife conservation and safeguard our biodiversity."

Just a few days prior, Chief Minister Yadav had announced that the tiger reserve designation would soon be conferred upon Madhav National Park located in the Shivpuri district. He also indicated the forthcoming release of a pair of tigers into the park.

Madhya Pradesh has established its reputation as the "Tiger State", attracting wildlife enthusiasts and becoming a significant wildlife tourism hub.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the growing number of tourists in the Chambal region would create enhanced job and self-employment prospects for local youth.

In a thrilling development, leopards have been sighted in Kuno National Park in the Sheopur district, part of the Chambal region that also hosts African cheetahs. Additionally, initiatives are in progress for a gharial and dolphin project in the Chambal River, as mentioned by the Chief Minister.

Situated in the Shivpuri district, Madhav National Park was originally designated as Shivpuri National Park in 1956, covering an area of 167 square kilometers. It was renamed in 1958 in honor of Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of the Scindia dynasty.

The park includes Sakhya Sagar, a man-made reservoir classified as a Ramsar site.

Shivpuri town, which was once the summer capital and a vast hunting ground for the Scindia Maharajas of Gwalior, faced deterioration following India's Independence, and the last known wild tigers were sighted in Madhav National Park in the late 1970s. A plan was proposed in 1982 to enlarge the park along the Sindh River, creating a corridor to connect it with its original 167 square kilometers, expanding the area to 354 square kilometers.

With its new status as a tiger reserve, Madhav National Park will now encompass 1,751 square kilometers, featuring a core zone of 375 square kilometers and a buffer zone of 1,276 square kilometers.
