Seoul, Sep 23 (NationPress) Yoon Suk Yeol, the former President of South Korea, has informed correctional authorities that he will not attend a special counsel inquiry scheduled for later this week, according to officials on Tuesday.

On Saturday, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team issued a summons for the imprisoned ex-president to be questioned on Wednesday regarding allegations linked to his brief martial law declaration in December, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

"I understand that former President Yoon verbally informed a detention center officer of his decision not to appear," assistant special counsel Park Ji-young stated during a briefing. "We will determine if he indeed fails to show up tomorrow and will then decide whether to issue another summons."

Cho's team had anticipated using this week's questioning session to interrogate Yoon about accusations that he commanded a drone operation towards Pyongyang last October, allegedly to provoke North Korea and justify his martial law declaration.

To date, the team has only questioned military personnel regarding the operation, making Saturday's summons the first instance where investigators have called Yoon to respond to these allegations.

Yoon has been held at the Seoul Detention Centre in Uiwang, located just south of the capital, since July, and is currently facing trial for charges of inciting insurrection and misusing his power through the martial law initiative.

Additionally, a Seoul court is set to conduct a bail hearing for Yoon later this week, as legal sources disclosed on Tuesday.

The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Seoul Central District Court, following Yoon's bail request last week, which cited his right to mount a defense and health-related concerns.

The former president is in the midst of a trial concerning accusations of leading an insurrection related to his martial law attempt, with a second trial regarding separate charges of infringing upon the rights of Cabinet members and amending a proclamation post-martial law set to commence on Friday.

The bail hearing is expected to occur immediately after the initial session of the second trial.

Last week, legal sources confirmed that Yoon Suk Yeol has sought bail to properly prepare his defense and address health issues.

The application was submitted on September 19 to the Seoul Central District Court, which is currently handling charges against him for obstructing duties and abusing his authority. A date for the bail hearing has yet to be confirmed, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
