Is Sonam Wangchuk's Health in Jeopardy While Imprisoned in Jodhpur?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Jan 31 (NationPress) Activist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently detained in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), has reported health issues and was transferred to AIIMS Jodhpur for medical evaluation on Saturday morning, as per police sources. He was escorted to the hospital under strict security measures at approximately 6:30 am via a rear entrance of AIIMS.
Initially, he was assessed in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Department before being seen at the Outpatient Department (OPD). Wangchuk spent around one and a half hours at the hospital before returning to jail. He had also received a medical examination at AIIMS the previous day. Reports from AIIMS indicate that he is experiencing gastrointestinal issues and discomfort in various parts of his body.
It is speculated that the alleged contamination of water in Jodhpur Central Jail may be contributing to his declining health.
Though there were preliminary conversations regarding consultations with specialists in the PMR department, Wangchuk was ultimately examined by a gastroenterologist in the emergency section, after which a police escort returned him to jail.
In the meantime, Wangchuk’s spouse, Geetanjali Angmo, has approached the Supreme Court, requesting immediate medical care for her husband. In her application, submitted through legal counsel, she highlighted that Wangchuk has been enduring ongoing stomach pain for several weeks, attributed to the quality of drinking water in jail. She also claimed that specialized medical professionals have not been visiting the facility for his assessment and requested authorization for weekly medical evaluations along with the provision of clean drinking water from relatives.
The Supreme Court has taken note of her plea and instructed the jail administration to ensure that Sonam Wangchuk is assessed by a specialist from a government hospital, with a medical report to be submitted in a sealed envelope by February 2.
“Throughout over three hearings spanning 5.5 hours on January 8, January 12, and January 29, 2026, the procedural errors in @Wangchuk66’s detention order and intentional factual inaccuracies regarding his videos were exposed. The opposing party will present their case on February 2,” his wife, Gitanjali, stated in a post on her X handle.
According to the jail administration, Wangchuk has been examined by jail doctors a total of 21 times to date. Sonam Wangchuk has been in judicial custody at Jodhpur Central Jail since September 26 of last year, linked to unrest in Leh, Ladakh.
