New Delhi, Oct 4 (NationPress) The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea on Monday from Gitanjali J. Angmo, spouse of Sonam Wangchuk, contesting the detention of the climate activist based in Leh. The causelist available on the apex court's website indicates that a Bench consisting of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria will address this issue on October 6.
On Friday, Angmo shared a tweet via the social media platform X, stating, “I have sought relief from the Supreme Court of India through a Habeas Corpus petition regarding Sonam Wangchuk's detention. It has been one week today. I still lack information about Wangchuk's health and the grounds for his detention.”
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has accused Sonam Wangchuk of inciting violence in Leh.
After commencing a hunger strike on September 10, Wangchuk ended his fast when violence erupted in the town, subsequently escaping in an ambulance.
He was later detained under the National Safety Act (NSA) and transferred to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.
Both the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), leading the movement for statehood and inclusion in the 6th Schedule, have called for the unconditional release of Sonam Wangchuk and others detained on September 24, along with accountability for the shooting that resulted in the deaths of four civilians.
Those who lost their lives in the incident include Jigmet Dorjey from Kharnak, Rinchen Dadul from Hanu, Stanzin Namgail from Igoo, and Tsewang Tharchin from Skurbucha.
The UT administration has asserted that security forces fired in self-defense as unruly protesters hurled stones and set fire to a CRPF vehicle, allegedly trying to burn the personnel inside.
The mob also set ablaze the local BJP office and the LAB's office, while the vehicle of DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal was wrecked, and the police chief managed to escape with injuries.
