New Delhi, Oct 3 (NationPress) Gitanjali J. Angmo, spouse of Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court contesting the detention of the climate activist from Leh.
“I have approached the Supreme Court of India seeking relief through a Habeas Corpus petition concerning Sonam Wangchuk's detention. Today marks a week, and I still lack information regarding Wangchuk's health, his current condition, or the grounds for his detention,” Angmo stated in a social media update.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has accused Sonam Wangchuk of inciting violence in the Leh area.
Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike since September 10. Following the outbreak of violence, he terminated his fast and was evacuated from the scene in an ambulance.
Following this, the activist was detained under the National Safety Act (NSA) and relocated to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Both the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), leading the movement for statehood and the UT's inclusion in the 6th Schedule, have called for the unconditional release of Sonam Wangchuk and others detained on September 24. They also demand accountability for the shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of four civilians.
Four local residents, identified as Jigmet Dorjey from Kharnak, Rinchen Dadul from Hanu, Stanzin Namgail from Igoo, and Tsewang Tharchin from Skurbucha, lost their lives in this tragic incident.
The UT administration asserts that the security forces were compelled to open fire in self-defense when unruly protesters threw stones and set ablaze a CRPF vehicle, attempting to harm the personnel inside.
Additionally, the mob targeted the local BJP office and the LAB office, while damaging the vehicle of DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, with the police chief narrowly escaping with injuries.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations persist in their demand for Wangchuk’s release and a peaceful resolution to the political aspirations of Ladakh.
