Jaipur, Sep 27 (NationPress) Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been transferred from the union territory to Jodhpur Central Jail under stringent security measures on Friday, following his arrest earlier that day. Sources reveal that after his apprehension in Leh, Wangchuk was initially flown to Delhi.

From there, he was conveyed to Jodhpur under special protocols. Upon arrival, he was directly taken to the Central Jail from Jodhpur Air Force Station, accompanied by a substantial security convoy. Inside the jail, preparations were reportedly in place as early as 3 p.m. on Friday in anticipation of a high-profile inmate.

Authorities disclosed that the staff had been informed of a VIP's arrival, although no formal details were provided until that point. At approximately 8:30 pm, police and military vehicles entered the jail complex consecutively through the Red Gate.

Wangchuk was officially handed over to the jail management at the main entrance and subsequently relocated to a distinct ward within the facility.

Leh remains on edge after violent confrontations erupted on September 24 during demonstrations advocating for full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

This unrest, which ignited following nearly two weeks of a peaceful hunger strike, led to the loss of four lives and numerous injuries.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been the prominent face of the protests, was detained on Friday. The government has accused him of inciting the violence, although officials have not clarified the specific charges against him.

The victims of the Leh violence have been identified as Tsewang Tharchin (46), Stanzin Namgyal (24), Jigmet Dorjay (25), and Rinchen Dadul (21).

Over 45 individuals were injured, including both protesters and law enforcement personnel. Ladakh DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal confirmed that 15 individuals sustained serious injuries, while 30 experienced minor wounds. Following the altercations, the administration imposed a curfew under Section 162 of the CrPC in Leh, which has persisted for the third consecutive day, with internet services suspended and a strong security presence.

Schools and colleges have also been instructed to remain closed until Saturday. The protests commenced on September 10 with a hunger strike advocating for statehood and constitutional protections for Ladakh.

Wangchuk had consistently urged the government to address local issues, cautioning that tensions could escalate if their demands were overlooked. “If the government continues to disregard our requests, unfortunately, this may occur again,” he had stated shortly before the violence erupted.

Authorities have arrested 60 individuals in connection with the clashes thus far. Officials are maintaining a vigilant watch, warning against further unrest as Leh continues to deal with political and social strains linked to the statehood movement.
