Jaipur, Sep 27 (NationPress) A young man, holding a Tricolour, was taken into custody on Saturday while demonstrating outside Jodhpur Central Jail in support of the Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was arrested in relation to the recent violence in Leh.
Wangchuk was moved to Jodhpur Central Jail the previous day.
On Saturday morning, the youth, identifying himself as Vijaypal from Sujangarh in Churu district, began protesting outside the jail, chanting slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. Authorities quickly arrived and detained him for questioning.
In his remarks to the police, Vijaypal stated, “Sonam Wangchuk is a patriot. All residents of Leh-Ladakh are patriots. During the Kargil war, they were the ones who informed the Indian Army of the infiltration. Upon learning that Wangchuk was brought here, I cycled from Sujangarh Railway Station to Jodhpur.”
Vijaypal also warned of a hunger strike if he was detained. However, police officials took him away in their vehicle. Ratanada Police Station Officer Dinesh Lakhawat confirmed that Vijaypal was in custody and undergoing interrogation.
“He claims to be an ordinary citizen,” Lakhawat mentioned. Wangchuk was brought to Jodhpur Central Jail late Friday night. Around 8:30 p.m., police and military vehicles entered through the Red Gate.
After completing the necessary formalities, he was placed in a separate ward. This arrest was made following violent confrontations in Leh on September 24.
Protests demanding full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule had escalated since September 10, culminating in violence on that day, resulting in four fatalities and 45 injuries.
Wangchuk, who has been a prominent figure in these protests, previously warned, “If the government continues to disregard our demands, this unfortunate situation could recur.”
