Jaipur, Oct 3 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, on Friday called for the urgent release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been incarcerated in Jodhpur jail. Wangchuk, a highly esteemed figure from Ladakh, is known for his contributions to education, environmental advocacy, and various social issues. During a media briefing, Gehlot voiced his astonishment at the swift actions that led to Wangchuk's detention.
He remarked, “Sonam Wangchuk is a notable activist, dedicated to education, environmental sustainability, and a multitude of other important topics, and he enjoys immense respect across Leh and Ladakh.”
Gehlot also noted Wangchuk's past support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, mentioning that he has often praised the PM in various forums.
“He has been an advocate for Modi. Wherever he went, he would commend him and speak favorably about him. What has transpired that has led to such serious charges requiring his transfer to Jodhpur jail? It’s puzzling,” Gehlot stated.
In relation to Wangchuk’s wife, Gehlot commented, “She is exceptionally insightful. She has been actively writing letters and engaging in thoughtful discussions with the media. The government should heed her concerns.”
He reiterated that Wangchuk’s significant contributions to society and his clean public record make his ongoing detention hard to fathom. “I firmly believe he should be released at once,” Gehlot insisted, urging the authorities to take into account Wangchuk’s long history of public service and his esteemed status as an activist in Ladakh.
It's important to note that Gitanjali J. Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, has approached the Supreme Court to seek his release, following his detention last week under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) in Rajasthan's Jodhpur.
Angmo has contested Wangchuk's detention, questioning the application of the anti-terror law NSA against him.
Sharing a screenshot of her plea on X, Angmo expressed her concern, stating she had no updates regarding Wangchuk's health.
Wangchuk has long been a passionate advocate for educational reform and sustainable development in Ladakh. He has garnered both national and international acclaim for creating affordable schooling models, promoting environmental stewardship, and fostering scientific innovation among students.
