Bhopal/Khandwa, Nov 18 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, the Madhya Pradesh government has scrapped the contentious Mamleshwar Lok project planned for the sacred city of Omkareshwar due to overwhelming public discontent, a two-day shutdown, and collective opposition from the Sant Samaj (seer community).

The announcement followed two days during which markets, shops, and ghats were closed, causing the pilgrim town—home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingams of Lord Shiva—to come to a complete halt.

The proposed project aimed to develop and build various facilities related to religious tourism, with an investment of Rs 120 crore, alongside a corridor around the historic Mamleshwar temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) located in Omkareshwar, Khandwa district.

Thousands of devotees, locals, and sadhus protested in the streets, calling for the project's cancellation, citing threats to their livelihoods, forced relocations, and disruption of age-old religious practices.

In an official statement, the Khandwa Additional Collector declared, "The expansion of Mamleshwar Lok at the current site is hereby canceled effective immediately."

A comprehensive survey indicated that the project would lead to the displacement of numerous families, unemployment for many, and infringement upon several ashrams along the Narmada riverbank.

The potential demolition or relocation of these spiritual centers triggered strong opposition from both saints and residents.

Seers had cautioned that constructing a large-scale tourist and religious complex would disrupt Omkareshwar's tranquil spiritual ambiance and threaten ashrams that have catered to pilgrims for generations.

"This is not progress; it is a destruction of our faith and heritage," a prominent mahant stated during the demonstrations.

The administration recognized the strength of public sentiment.

"The survey clearly indicated significant displacement and loss of livelihood for local families. Several ashrams would also have been impacted, which hurt religious sentiments," stated the order issued on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the state government clarified that the vision for Mamleshwar Lok has not been entirely abandoned—only its current location.

"The project will be relocated to a more suitable site," the Additional Collector mentioned in the order.

"Any new location will be determined after thorough consultations and obtaining the consent of all parties involved."

The state government plans to consult and gain the approval of seers, public representatives, local residents, and all stakeholders.

No further actions will be taken without comprehensive community agreement.

The announcement was celebrated across Omkareshwar.

Temple bells echoed, devotees shared sweets, and saints hailed it as a triumph of dharma over insensitivity towards development.

Local merchants, who suffered during the bandh, expressed relief while stressing that any future plans must prioritize the interests of residents and the town's sacred character.
