MP Farmer ID drive: CM Mohan Yadav urges digital registration from 20 Aug
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday, 28 August called on farmers across the state to enrol for digital Farmer IDs, noting that government field teams had been visiting households since the registration exercise commenced on 20 August. The initiative is part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, a nationwide push to bring digital infrastructure to the farming sector.
What the Farmer ID Offers
The Farmer ID functions as a trusted digital identity for cultivators — comparable in design and purpose to the Aadhaar card — and is intended to deliver timely, personalised access to agriculture-related information and government schemes. Once created, the ID will be linked to a farmer's land records, livestock ownership, crops sown, and a history of government benefits received.
'The Farmer ID, akin to the Aadhaar card, has been introduced to provide timely, personalised and highly reliable access to agriculture-related information and services. This ID serves as a trusted digital identity for farmers,' Yadav said in a statement.
Door-to-Door Rollout Across the State
Unlike earlier pilot phases, the Madhya Pradesh rollout involves field-level government teams visiting farmers at their homes to assist with the enrolment process. Yadav emphasised that no farmer need travel to a government office — the registration facility is being brought directly to them. The Chief Minister urged all eligible farmers to avail themselves of the scheme without delay.
Pilot projects for Farmer IDs and digital crop surveys had previously been conducted in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu before the full state-wide rollout in Madhya Pradesh began.
Broader Digital Agriculture Mission
The Digital Agriculture Mission encompasses the creation of digital public infrastructure, digital crop estimation surveys, and coordinated adoption of digital tools by both the Centre and state governments, as well as agricultural education and research institutions. Yadav linked the initiative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader digital governance agenda, which he said had already transformed service delivery through digital identity, secure payments, and seamless transactions.
'The country's digital revolution, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has brought about significant transformations in governance and service delivery in recent years through digital identity, secure payments and seamless transactions,' he said.
What This Means for Farmers
The integrated digital identity is expected to streamline access to government schemes, reduce paperwork, and make agriculture-related services more reliable at the village and individual farmer level. The state government has been expanding farmer-centric digital public infrastructure as part of this mission. With the full state-wide drive now underway, the pace of enrolment and the quality of last-mile delivery will determine whether the initiative achieves meaningful reach among Madhya Pradesh's large agrarian population.
