Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday, 24 August announced that the state government will organise agriculture innovation dialogue programmes at the divisional and district levels, aimed at promoting modern farming techniques, technology adoption, and agriculture-based entrepreneurship among youth. The announcement was made during a youth dialogue held at Ravindra Bhavan in Bhopal.

Connecting Youth with Agricultural Opportunity

Addressing young participants, Yadav said the initiative is designed to link youth with emerging opportunities in agriculture and contribute to raising farmers' incomes. He emphasised that the nature of farming is changing rapidly, and that adopting new technology, modern agricultural machinery, horticulture, and organic and natural farming practices can transform agriculture into a profitable business for young entrepreneurs.

The Chief Minister also noted that agriculture faculties have been introduced in several universities across the state, urging students in these programmes to explore innovation and entrepreneurship while staying rooted in farming.

Diversified Income Streams for Farmers

Yadav outlined several avenues through which young farmers could enhance their earnings, including polyhouse cultivation, food processing, warehousing, mushroom farming, pearl farming, and beekeeping. He pointed out that mushroom and pearl farming can be initiated from a single room, making them accessible even to those with limited resources, while horticulture crops can yield higher returns from smaller landholdings.

He further stressed the importance of income diversification by encouraging farmers to take up dairy, fisheries, goat rearing, and poultry alongside conventional crop cultivation.

Dairy and Livestock Push

Yadav highlighted that Madhya Pradesh is currently the third-largest milk-producing state in India and that the government has signed an agreement with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to strengthen the dairy sector. The state has set a target of producing one lakh Gir breed calves annually, with improved livestock expected to boost milk output and provide farmers with a steady income stream.

Under the Bhimrao Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana, the government is offering a subsidy of ₹10 lakh for setting up a 25-cow dairy unit, against a total project cost of approximately ₹43 lakh.

Fisheries and Irrigation Expansion

To promote fisheries and reduce the state's dependence on other states for fish seed, three fish-seed hatcheries have been established in Madhya Pradesh, Yadav said. On irrigation, he added that the state is actively expanding irrigation capacity to ensure more agricultural land receives assured water supply.

Farmer Welfare Measures

The Chief Minister also outlined existing support mechanisms for farmers, noting that the state government has provided a bonus over and above the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat procurement. Soybean growers, he said, have benefited from the Bhavantar scheme, which compensates farmers when market prices fall below MSP levels. These measures, he argued, collectively strengthen the financial safety net for the farming community.

The planned divisional and district-level dialogues are expected to serve as platforms for translating these policy announcements into ground-level action, with youth at the centre of Madhya Pradesh's agricultural transformation agenda.
