Bhopal, April 11 (NationPress) A court in Bhopal has granted bail to the relatives of Saurabh Sharma, a former Constable with the Madhya Pradesh Transport Department, in connection with a case regarding disproportionate assets. The court approved bail for his mother, wife, cousin, and brother-in-law, each on a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh.
However, the bail plea for Sharma remains unresolved as he is currently in judicial custody.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted extensive questioning of Sharma and has confiscated assets worth Rs 100.36 crore so far.
His family members were granted bail by the Special PMLA court in Bhopal, as confirmed by his attorney Rakesh Parashar in a statement to IANS.
Sharma’s bail application has yet to be addressed.
The court, presided over by Special Judge Ashutosh Shukla, issued the bail upon the submission of personal bonds of Rs 10 lakh each, as stated by the advocate.
No proceedings took place regarding Sharma's bail on Friday.
Family members of the former constable were detained by the ED for purported violations of the PMLA.
While in custody, they underwent extensive questioning.
On April 9, the ED also submitted a prosecution complaint in court against Sharma and others.
Sharma and others are under investigation for alleged corruption by several agencies, including the Lokayukta, ED, Central Bureau of Investigation, Income Tax Department, and Madhya Pradesh Police.
A new bail application will be submitted for Sharma and others, according to his lawyer.
Sharma was appointed on October 29, 2016, and opted for voluntary retirement on June 9, 2023.
This appointment sparked significant controversy during the recently concluded Budget session of the state Assembly.
Additionally, the state police have initiated a case against Sharma and his mother for submitting a 'false affidavit' claiming that no family members were employed in government roles to secure a government position on compassionate grounds following his father's death.
Sharma's elder brother, Sachin Sharma, was already employed in the Chhattisgarh government, a detail he intentionally omitted during his appointment process.
