Mumbai Crime Branch Nabs Black Marketer of T20 Semifinal Tickets
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 5 (NationPress) In a significant crackdown amid the India–England T20 World Cup semifinal at Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Crime Branch has apprehended an individual for the illegal sale of match tickets at inflated prices of Rs 25,000. Authorities reported the recovery of 10 authentic tickets during the operation, which took place on Thursday.
The Crime Branch revealed that the suspect was marketing the tickets at prices that far exceeded the official rates set by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Allegations indicate he was charging Rs 25,000 per ticket in the black market. Alongside the tickets, a mobile device was also confiscated.
The operation was initiated by the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch in response to a complaint from a cricket fan residing in Dongri, who was eager to enjoy the semifinal with friends. While searching for tickets, he encountered a person named Zaheer Bamne, who suggested that ticket prices were inconsistent and higher than the ICC's established rates.
On March 4, the suspect purportedly requested Rs 25,000 for a single ticket, instructing the complainant to meet him near a restaurant at Dockyard Road with the money. The complainant then informed the Crime Branch, which set a trap.
A team positioned themselves near the Gani Building, adjacent to Nawab Hayat Masjid at Dockyard Road. Shortly after, the suspect, identified as Kamaluddin Bamne, aged 51, arrived and was arrested by undercover officers. A search yielded 10 original tickets for various stands at Wankhede Stadium.
Authorities are currently investigating how the suspect acquired the tickets and whether there is a larger network involved in the black market for high-demand World Cup events.
Ticket prices for the semifinal reportedly ranged from Rs 2,500 for North and East Stand seats to approximately Rs 4,500 for the Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Merchant stands. Premium seating at the Garware Pavilion was estimated at around Rs 12,000, while hospitality and corporate box tickets could reach Rs 45,000.
