Six Arrested in Ahmedabad for IPL Betting Operation

Ahmedabad, April 4 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of Ahmedabad has apprehended six individuals for allegedly conducting an online cricket betting scheme from a rented flat near the Memnagar locality, officials disclosed on Saturday.
The suspects placed bets on the IPL match held on Friday night between the Chennai Super Kings and the Punjab Kings through various online betting accounts.
Following a tip-off, law enforcement officials conducted a raid at an apartment located in Anand Park Society around 11 p.m., which was specifically leased for illegal gambling activities.
The individuals taken into custody include Kapil (alias Chirag Thakkar, 24), Abhay Thakkar (30), Yashkumar Akhani (30), Meet Jaiswal (25), Kalpesh Thakkar (35), and Dhruv Thakkar (27), all hailing from the Banaskantha district.
Authorities reported that the accused were involved in both placing bets and distributing betting IDs to other participants. A total of 16 mobile phones, estimated to be worth Rs 2,60,000, along with cash amounting to Rs 50,110, were seized, bringing the total value of the confiscated items to Rs 3,10,110.
Some of the suspects operated on a commission basis, while others engaged in real-time betting across multiple platforms.
The investigation is also targeting additional individuals believed to be supplying betting IDs, including Ronak Thakkar from Patan and Deep Thakkar from Ahmedabad, who are currently wanted.
Customers linked to this betting operation include Akash Lalwani from Ahmedabad, Kishan Thakkar from Gandhinagar, Jitu from Ahmedabad, and Zamak from Bhabhar.
An offence has been registered under the Gambling Act, and the investigation is ongoing to capture the remaining suspects and dismantle this betting ring.
Previously, the Crime Branch had executed actions against various cricket-related offenses tied to online ticket sales.
In one notable incident last June, city police arrested four individuals across two separate cases for unlawfully selling tickets to the IPL 2025 final match at inflated prices near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.
Moreover, in March of this year, a teenager in Ahmedabad was detained for allegedly attempting to sell ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final tickets at a significant markup after obtaining them through verified online platforms.
