Indore, May 5 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of Indore Police in Madhya Pradesh has detained a suspect for allegedly orchestrating an illegal online betting operation amidst the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches, as reported by police on Monday.
An official indicated that the apprehension occurred after a raid was executed in a residential area situated in Sector E of the city, leading to the immediate capture of the betting operator.
The suspect was identified as Abhay Sharma (27), a local resident of Indore.
During the raid, law enforcement seized multiple mobile devices and three laptops from Sharma’s residence.
“Upon interrogation, Sharma admitted to running an illegal betting scheme from his rented apartment for several years,” the official stated.
According to the Indore Crime Branch, the accused utilized a specific website to execute and manage bets using personal login credentials.
“Sharma established a well-structured system to facilitate online betting via smartphones and laptops,” the Crime Branch elaborated.
Following his arrest, police filed an FIR against Sharma, charging him under sections 3 and 4 of the Gambling Act, alongside other pertinent offenses under the IT Act.
Authorities believe that additional individuals may be involved in the betting operation, prompting an ongoing search.
“The suspect has been taken into custody for further inquiry, as it is suspected that others (his associates) are implicated in this case,” the official remarked.
In the meantime, the Crime Branch’s Technical Department is currently analyzing the laptops, smartphones, and other electronic items retrieved from Sharma.
This incident marks the second online betting racket dismantled in Indore within the last fortnight.
Previously, on April 27, the Indore Crime Branch Police apprehended a man linked to online betting on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final match between India and New Zealand.
