Mumbai, Jan 19 (NationPress) As the dust settles on the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the political landscape in Maharashtra is rife with speculation about a pivotal question — who will take the helm as the next Mayor of Mumbai? With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the largest party, the atmosphere is thick with anticipation as political leaders await the critical reservation lottery that could shift the balance of power.
The Urban Development Ministry has announced that the mayoral reservation lottery for all 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, is slated for January 22, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Mantralaya in Mumbai.
This lottery will determine the reservation category for the Mayor's position (Open, OBC, SC, ST, or women). Until this is resolved, the contest remains fiercely competitive.
Political experts have highlighted a potential edge for Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT).
Prior to the elections, two wards were specifically reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category — Ward 53, won by Jitendra Valvi (Sena UBT), defeating Ashok Khandve of Shinde Sena, and Ward 121, which was secured by Priyadarshani Thackeray (Sena UBT) against Shinde Sena's Pratima Khopde.
Should the lottery on January 22 favor the ST category, the Thackeray faction could find itself with the only eligible candidates, thereby potentially clinching the mayoralty despite holding fewer total seats.
Following the announcement of the BMC poll results on January 16, the BJP captured 89 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) garnered 65, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena obtained 29, Congress claimed 24, AIMIM 8, MNS 6, NCP (Ajit Pawar) 3, Samajwadi Party 2, and NCP-SP 1.
The mounting tension has sparked a verbal clash among leading figures.
Uddhav Thackeray, head of Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed optimism, stating: “If it is God’s will, the Mayor will be ours.”
In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, currently attending the World Economic Forum Summit in Davos, replied: “By God's will, I do not mean myself, but God has already decided — the Mayor will be from the Mahayuti.”
Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, aiming to secure his position, relocated his 29 corporators to a luxury hotel to avert any risk of “poaching” or “horse-trading” ahead of the decisive vote.
He assured party corporators that the Mahayuti will hold the mayoral office. With the Mahayuti (BJP + Shinde Sena) commanding a total of 118 seats (surpassing the 114 majority threshold), the alliance is currently favored to govern.
Nonetheless, if the reservation lottery favors the ST category, it could lead to a dramatic turn in the mayoral contest.
The BJP has made a significant mark in the recent elections, winning in 19 out of the 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai.
In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP gained control, delivering a setback to the NCP (Ajit Pawar) faction while maintaining its dominance in Nagpur.
In Sambhajinagar, the BJP successfully captured power, challenging the influence of the Thackeray faction.
