Myanmar President General Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday, 31 May 2025 visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mahabodhi Temple and the historic Sujata Temple in Bodh Gaya, offering prayers for world peace, harmony, and the welfare of humanity. The visit marks his first trip to India since assuming office and precedes high-level diplomatic talks scheduled in New Delhi.

Arrival and Security Arrangements

President Min Aung Hlaing arrived at Gaya International Airport at approximately 9:00 am aboard a special aircraft, where he was received by representatives of the Bihar administration and senior government officials. His convoy then proceeded to Bodh Gaya under a tight security escort through a carefully secured route.

Given the significance of the visit, the district administration deployed multiple layers of security across the city. District Magistrate Shashank Shubhankar and Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar personally supervised the arrangements. Personnel from the police, special security units, and intelligence agencies were stationed at strategic locations throughout the area.

Temple Visits and Prayers

Upon reaching Bodh Gaya, the delegation was first escorted to a designated reception and rest area before proceeding to the Mahabodhi Temple complex — one of the holiest sites in Buddhism, marking the spot where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. After offering prayers there, President Min Aung Hlaing visited the Burmese Buddhist Monastery on Sujata Bypass Road, followed by the historic Sujata Temple, where he also paid his respects.

Members of his high-level delegation, comprising several cabinet ministers, senior officials, and business leaders, accompanied him throughout both visits. The engagements concluded peacefully and without incident, after which the President returned to Gaya Airport and departed for his next destination.

Upcoming Diplomatic and Business Agenda

The Bodh Gaya visit is part of a broader India itinerary for President Min Aung Hlaing. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), he is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 June to discuss further strengthening bilateral ties between India and Myanmar. He will also participate in a business forum before travelling to Mumbai on 2 June for industry interactions and site visits.

Significance of the Visit

This is President Min Aung Hlaing's first official visit to India since taking office, making it a diplomatically significant moment for India-Myanmar relations. Bodh Gaya holds deep religious importance for Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, and the choice of the site as an early stop on his itinerary underscores the cultural and spiritual dimensions of the bilateral relationship. This comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of Myanmar's political situation, making the Modi-Min Aung Hlaing talks on 1 June particularly closely watched.
