Amaravati, Jan 7 (NationPress) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Wednesday, urged Telangana to refrain from playing politics regarding river water sharing matters.
Voicing his worries about the politicization surrounding water allocation between the two Telugu states, the Chief Minister clarified that he has never opposed projects in Telangana.
He questioned the appropriateness of objecting to the Polavaram project being executed by Andhra Pradesh.
This statement came in response to the objections raised by the Telangana government concerning the expansion of the Polavaram project.
The Telangana government has approached the Supreme Court to halt the Polavaram-Nallamalla Sagar project, which aims to redirect water from the Godavari River to the Krishna basin in Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu spoke to reporters following his visit to Polavaram in Eluru district to assess the progress of this significant project.
He emphasized that utilizing surplus water, which is currently flowing wastefully into the sea, is entirely justified. “Upon the completion of the Polavaram project, we can harness surplus water from the Godavari, supply Krishna water to the Rayalaseema region, and if there’s an excess, we can also provide it to Telangana,” he stated.
Naidu remarked that political leaders should not engage in competition over water sharing issues, urging the citizens of Telangana to reflect on this.
He affirmed that all Telugu-speaking individuals are united and should adopt a spirit of cooperation.
He reiterated that political leaders must avoid sowing discord between the two states.
Naidu stressed the importance of linking rivers across the country to achieve a drought-free nation.
He recalled that during the regime of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a task force was established to explore river linking.
According to him, with the interlinking of rivers, the state could eradicate drought and promote development across all regions.
During his inspection of the Polavaram project, he announced that the construction of the new diaphragm wall is expected to be finished by February 15, with a goal set to complete all Phase I work by March 2027 to enable water release.
Naidu mentioned that the government is required to allocate an additional Rs 1000 crore for the construction of the new diaphragm wall. Main dam construction is nearing completion, and embankment work is expected to finish by June.
Upon completion of the Polavaram project, substantial inland waterways will be made available, and connectivity will be established through both right and left canals. Measures are in place to supply water to Visakhapatnam through the Polavaram left main canal, providing irrigation facilities to both Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts via this canal.
He added that the Pattiseema lift irrigation scheme has stabilized the Krishna delta by diverting Godavari water into the Krishna river, subsequently reaching the Rayalaseema region. Consequently, Rayalaseema has transformed into a horticulture hub, with the state government taking initiatives to establish it as a global horticulture center.
Describing the Polavaram project as the core of Andhra Pradesh, Naidu stated that fulfilling this project and promoting river linking nationally is his lifelong ambition.
He disclosed that the TDP government invested Rs 65,000 crore from 2014-19 in the irrigation sector, including Rs 12,000 crore in Rayalaseema.
