Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Odisha and President of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the Union Budget for 2026–27 presented in Parliament on Sunday, claiming that the budget provided "no significant advantages" for Odisha and its residents.
In a statement on his official X account, Patnaik remarked, "I am disappointed with the #Budget2026 unveiled today by the Union government. The budget has presented no significant advantages to #Odisha and its residents."
The former Chief Minister emphasized that the people of Odisha were anticipating that the double-engine government would foster growth, with a particular emphasis on infrastructure development, job creation, and increased allocations for the state.
He contended that, in stark contrast to the high expectations of the populace, the state received minimal support from the Union Budget.
Nonetheless, Patnaik acknowledged the proposal to create a Rare Earth Corridor in Odisha, in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, which was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her budget speech.
Patnaik stated, "I welcome the initiative to establish the Rare Earth Corridor in Odisha. Our state is a leading producer of numerous essential minerals and will always play a vital role in nation-building through its abundant resources."
The former Chief Minister further highlighted that the Union government reiterated its commitment to operationalizing National Waterways-5 to link mineral-rich regions and industrial hubs to the ports.
He criticized that, despite being a proposal on the table for over a decade, no tangible progress has been made.
Patnaik directed his ire at the Union government, asserting, "It is profoundly disappointing for the people of Odisha that the plan to develop seven High-Speed Rail corridors as 'growth connectors' does not include Odisha. The Odisha BJP halted the #BhubaneswarMetro project earlier, and the neglect of the people's needs persists."
He also condemned the Union government for entirely overlooking Odisha, despite the state housing several significant Buddhist sites, in the tourism-focused initiative announced in the Budget for the development of Buddhist circuits.
Patnaik argued, "The overall Union Budget indicates that Odisha is allocated resources solely for the extraction of its natural wealth, while being disregarded in terms of resource allocation for the benefit of its citizens. It is time for the BJP-led state government to take responsibility and ensure that the people of Odisha receive their rightful share from the Centre. Odisha and its citizens deserve more and better from the Union Budget."
