Bhubaneswar, March 10 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) and president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, on Tuesday criticized the Odisha government for its lack of urgency in rescuing Odia citizens stranded in West Asian nations amidst the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Patnaik expressed his deep concern for the Odia individuals caught in this turmoil—ranging from labourers and students to professionals, tourists, and travellers—as well as for their families back in Odisha who are anxiously awaiting their safe return.
He noted that with air routes closed, flights cancelled, and borders shut, it is now the responsibility of the Odisha government to ensure the safe repatriation of all Odias.
“The government's apparent indifference and lack of swift action are exacerbating the difficulties faced by these individuals. Why is the government not responding with the urgency this situation demands?” Patnaik questioned.
He further challenged the state administration, asking, “Where is the grand discourse about ‘Odia Asmita’ when it fails to support the people of Odisha during such a critical period? The Odisha government should move beyond mere rhetoric and take decisive measures to bring all Odias back from the conflict areas. Prompt action is essential to reassure every Odia and potentially save lives.”
Patnaik reiterated his appeal to both the Odisha and Indian governments to act swiftly to ensure the return of these citizens to India. He had previously reached out to the External Affairs Minister of India, S. Jaishankar, asking for urgent measures to rescue the stranded Odias from the conflict zones.
In response to the situation, the Odisha government has formed a working group in collaboration with various departments, including the Odisha Parivar Directorate and the Home Department, to monitor the safety and welfare of Odia migrant workers, professionals, and tourists in the Gulf region.
The Officer on Special Duty, Pritish Panda, from the Directorate of Odisha Paribar, has been appointed as the key liaison for coordinating with the Odia Diaspora.
Meanwhile, Odisha's Panchayati Raj Minister, Rabinarayan Naik, stated on Tuesday that the government is taking necessary actions to ensure the safety of Odia individuals stranded in West Asian countries while also overseeing the supply of LPG and the pricing of essential goods.
