Bhubaneswar, June 28 (NationPress) The President of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, voiced significant worries on Saturday regarding the “excessive delay” in pulling the Nandighosha chariot during this year's Jagannath Ratha Yatra held in Puri.
In a post shared on X, Patnaik chose not to directly accuse the administration; however, he emphasized that remaining silent was not an option given the mismanagement of such a vital event in the state.
“Our intention is not to assign blame but to express our profound concern and disappointment over the events that transpired during our State's most revered occasion,” he stated.
Patnaik recalled last year's incident during the Adapa Bije Pahandi ritual, when the idol of Lord Balabhadra slipped, an event that deeply unsettled many devotees.
“This year, we saw the Nandighosha chariot remain at the Singhadwar until 7:45 p.m., moving only a short distance before the day concluded,” he added, remarking that this left countless devotees who traveled from around the globe feeling disenchanted and disillusioned. Furthermore, he noted that hundreds of devotees suffered injuries due to inadequate crowd control.
Emphasizing the need for improved crowd management, Patnaik pointed out the injuries sustained by many attendees due to poor organization. “All we can do is pray: May Mahaprabhu Jagannath forgive those accountable for this unfortunate situation that has overshadowed the divine celebration. I hope this prompts serious reflection within the government,” he mentioned.
On Friday, while most rituals, including the Pahandi of the deities, proceeded mostly on time as per the Jagannath Temple Administration's schedule, the pulling of the chariots faced significant delays, resulting in dissatisfaction among the assembled devotees.
The chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra — Taladhwaja and Darpadalana — halted midway, while the Nandighosha chariot moved only a short distance from the Lion Gate (Singhadwar) before coming to a standstill.
In response to media inquiries regarding the delay, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated on Friday that the chariot pulling commenced at 4 p.m. after the completion of all scheduled rituals. However, complications at crucial turning points on the Bada Danda (Grand Road), along with an unexpectedly large turnout of devotees — reportedly 1.5 times greater than in previous years — caused the disruption.
“Favorable weather conditions contributed to the increased turnout this year, complicating crowd management,” he explained.
