Bhubaneswar, June 29 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, has harshly condemned the state government's handling of the recent stampede in Puri that resulted in the loss of three lives.
“I am cautious not to label the government as criminally negligent, but their clear indifference has played a significant role in this tragedy. I implore the government to take immediate actions to ensure the smooth execution of essential #RathYatra rituals like Adapa Bije, Bahuda, and Suna Besha,” Patnaik expressed on his X account.
He also conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved families of the three devotees who perished in the stampede at Saradhabali, Puri, and prayed to Lord Jagannath for the quick recovery of those injured in this heart-wrenching incident.
“The stampede that occurred today, merely a day after the chaotic crowd management during the #RathYatra that left many injured, reveals the government’s glaring incompetence in ensuring a safe festival for its devotees. Witnesses reported that the initial help came from the relatives of the victims, with no government support to manage the overwhelming crowds, showcasing a shocking negligence,” Patnaik added.
Additionally, he criticized the state government for attributing the significant delay in the chariot pulling to the will of Lord Jagannath, labeling it a shocking excuse to mask administrative ineptitude.
“The excessive delay in pulling the Nandighosha chariot on Rath Yatra day was absurdly justified by citing 'Mahaprabhu’s wish', a shocking excuse that conceals the administration’s total failure to fulfill its responsibilities,” Patnaik asserted.
During a media briefing, Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain mentioned that after the ceremonial closure of Darshan (Pahuda), a large influx of devotees surged towards the cordon early in the morning.
He added that around nine individuals reported feeling breathless and were promptly evacuated to the hospital. Currently, three fatalities have been confirmed, while six others are receiving treatment. The post-mortem of the deceased is currently ongoing.
The tragic stampede occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. The deceased have been identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty, and Basanti Sahoo.
