Is Canada's Navneet Dhaliwal Retiring from International Cricket After T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Canada's all-time leading run-scorer in T20 internationals and former team captain, Navneet Dhaliwal, has declared his intention to retire from international cricket following the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.
He will don the national jersey for the last time against Afghanistan during their final group stage match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai this Thursday.
Dhaliwal shared that his decision was made prior to the World Cup.
"I made this decision before arriving here. Having played for over 12 years, this was a planned move, and this match will mark my farewell," Dhaliwal stated, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Since debuting for Canada in 2015, he has accumulated 1305 runs in 48 T20I matches, making him the highest run-scorer for the team. Additionally, he has played 18 ODIs, scoring 456 runs.
As captain, Dhaliwal has an impressive record, winning 21 out of the 25 matches under his leadership, although he did lose two ODIs. He reflects on his captaincy and scoring 61 runs off 44 balls in his inaugural T20 World Cup match as his fondest memories.
"The best memory was our qualification for the World Cup. Scoring in our last opening game was also special. Being appointed captain was a proud achievement for me. Those moments will stay with me," he expressed.
Looking ahead, Dhaliwal aspires to transition into coaching, focusing on nurturing cricket talent at the grassroots level in Canada post-retirement.
"I am considering a coaching role, particularly with the youth. My goal is to find fulfillment in developing young players. Leaving cricket is challenging; it’s ingrained in me. My aim is to assist the younger generation in advancing their skills," he remarked.
Unfortunately, Canada has struggled in the ongoing T20 World Cup, losing all three of their initial group matches. They will aim to conclude their campaign positively against Afghanistan.
