NDA and Opposition MPs clashed in duelling protests outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament on Tuesday, 11 August, as both sides traded accusations over the police action against students in Jharkhand and the continuing disruption of parliamentary proceedings. The face-off marked one of the sharpest public confrontations between the two blocs this session.

NDA's Charge: Opposition Dodging the Discussion

BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs gathered with placards targeting Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the INDIA bloc was deliberately stalling Parliament to avoid a discussion on the Jharkhand student unrest. Banners carried slogans such as 'Grah Mantri ki Charcha se Rahul Gandhi bhago mat,' accusing Gandhi of fleeing a debate on Home Minister Amit Shah's proposed statement.

The government reiterated that Home Minister Amit Shah is fully prepared to address Parliament on the matter. BJP MP Sambit Patra questioned the Opposition's moral standing, pointing out that Congress members serve as MLAs and ministers in the Jharkhand government. 'The brutality against the students who were peacefully protesting in Jharkhand is condemnable. Who ordered the lathi-charge and such actions? Members of Rahul Gandhi's party are part of the Jharkhand government as MLAs and ministers. Is Rahul Gandhi not culpable?' Patra said.

BJP MP Dinesh Sharma echoed the charge, accusing Gandhi of a selective approach. 'He has turned a blind eye to the atrocities in Jharkhand. This selective approach will no longer work,' Sharma said.

Opposition's Counter: 'Amit Shah Must Come to the House'

Congress MPs staged a parallel protest, demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah personally appear in the House to make a statement. Their slogans — 'Amit Shah Sadan mei aao' — underscored the Opposition's insistence that a ministerial statement, not a party-level assurance, is the appropriate response.

Congress MP Pawan Khera launched a pointed attack on the ruling alliance. 'Home Minister Amit Shah runs away, we don't. They call themselves a 'Loh Purush', but the iron has rusted. These RSS people have always been like this. They are the biggest cowards,' Khera said. He added: 'Let our government come to power, and we will give them a fitting reply. The organisation called the RSS will cease to exist.'

Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh defended the Jharkhand state government, saying: 'You are in power, yet you are unable to accomplish anything. You talk about Jharkhand, where the government is addressing the issue. Our leader Rahul Gandhi has said that students should not be suppressed and that their concerns should be heard.'

The Jharkhand Student Protests: What Is at Stake

The student demonstrations in Jharkhand — and the reported police action against them — have emerged as the flashpoint of the current Parliament session. The Opposition has sought accountability from the Centre, while the ruling NDA has turned the lens on the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led state government, in which Congress is a coalition partner. This has created a political paradox: both sides claim to be defending the students while blaming each other for the crackdown.

Inside the House: Disruptions Continue

The protests outside Makar Dwar mirrored the deadlock within the chamber, where proceedings remained disrupted as neither side yielded ground. The government maintained that the Home Minister's statement would resolve the impasse; the Opposition maintained that only a formal statement on the floor of the House would suffice. With both positions hardening, the remainder of the session faces significant pressure.
