NEET-UG 2026 cancelled: Priyanka Chaturvedi blames paper leak syndicate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shiv Sena-UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Tuesday, 12 May alleged that a "syndicate" and a "broker system" are behind the paper leak that prompted the National Testing Agency (NTA) to cancel the NEET-UG 2026 examination. The NTA scrapped the exam citing alleged malpractice, plunging lakhs of medical aspirants into uncertainty.
What Chaturvedi Said
In a video message posted on social media platform X, Chaturvedi said: "There is a paper leak syndicate, a broker system that has been made, which functions unafraid under this government." She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre of failing to take accountability, calling the situation "extremely shameful."
The former Member of Parliament also expressed concern for the students who had spent months preparing. "After putting in hours of hard work the students have been told their exam stands null and void. Now they have to go through that grind again to prepare for the exam," she said. She also questioned the anguish faced by parents who invested time and resources in their children's medical ambitions.
Link to 2024 NEET Controversy
Chaturvedi drew a direct line to the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak controversy, pointing out that the same government and the same Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were in office during that episode as well. She recalled that following the 2024 incident, Pradhan had announced the formation of a seven-member committee to strengthen the NTA.
"I want to ask what was the report of the investigation and what was the result of the committee formation? How did the government ensure accountability?" she said, questioning whether any of those reform measures produced tangible results.
Demand for Prevention, Not Just Punishment
The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader argued that the government's response has consistently focused on punitive action after the fact rather than systemic prevention. "Why does the government not take prevention so that such incidents don't get repeated," she said, adding that the country's youth are suffering on two fronts: "unemployment and paper leaks."
She urged the Centre to crack down on the full chain of those involved. "I hope that there will be a crackdown on the syndicate that runs from the examiner to coaching classes to those who are involved in leaking exam papers," Chaturvedi said.
Broader Impact on Students
The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 affects lakhs of students across India who had appeared for the high-stakes medical entrance examination. With no fresh exam date announced yet, aspirants face an extended period of uncertainty. Chaturvedi invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's own words — that "the youth is the future of our country" — to press the government on why student futures are being repeatedly put at risk.
As pressure mounts on the NTA and the Education Ministry, the government's next steps on rescheduling the exam and establishing accountability will be closely watched by students, parents, and opposition parties alike.
