Seoul, July 11 (NationPress) The President of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, has appointed a ruling Democratic Party lawmaker as the new land minister and the CEO of a travel platform as the culture minister, as announced by the presidential office on Friday. This marks the completion of his inaugural Cabinet, consisting of 19 members.

Rep. Kim Yun-duk, a member of the Democratic Party, has been chosen to head the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. According to Kang Hoon-sik, the presidential chief of staff, Kim, who has served three terms in the National Assembly and has been involved with the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, aims to tackle real estate concerns from the viewpoint of everyday citizens rather than from an academic or bureaucratic stance.

"He is anticipated to actively implement the president's practical approach of safeguarding genuine housing demand while upholding market principles and firmly opposing speculative activities that lead to housing instability," Kang stated.

Moreover, Chae Hwi-young, the CEO of the travel platform Nol Universe, has been appointed as the minister of culture, sports, and tourism.

Nol Universe was established in 2024 through the merger of Yanolja Platform and Interpark Triple, resulting in a holistic travel and leisure service. Chae has previously held leadership roles at Interpark Triple and as the CEO of NHN, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Chae is deemed an ideal candidate to actualize the president's ambitions for the cultural sector, leveraging his private-sector knowledge and innovative vision, according to Kang.

Cabinet appointments are mandated by law to undergo parliamentary hearings but do not necessitate parliamentary approval for their appointment.

Additionally, President Lee Jae Myung has chaired his first National Security Council (NSC) meeting since assuming office last month, as stated by the presidential office.

During the NSC meeting, Lee received briefings on security matters. This meeting took place just a day after National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac returned from a four-day visit to the United States where discussions on trade negotiations and broader alliance matters were held with US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Point of View

It's clear that these Cabinet appointments reflect a strategic move by President Lee Jae Myung to bolster his administration with experienced leaders capable of addressing the pressing needs of the nation. The focus on practical solutions for real estate and cultural development is commendable, aligning with the expectations of the South Korean populace.
