Are the New Labour Codes the Most Significant Reform Since Independence? - NFITU General Secretary Virat Jaiswal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Nov 23 (NationPress) The National Front of Indian Trade Unions (NFITU) has praised the Modi administration's new labour codes, labeling them as a transformational milestone aimed at improving the lives of countless workers. NFITU General Secretary Dr. Virat Jaiswal referred to these reforms as the most historic labour evolution since Independence, confident that they will usher in the long-awaited change for India’s workforce.
Dr. Jaiswal pointed out that, for the first time in Indian history, workers will have a guaranteed minimum wage within a specific timeframe, a move he believes will finally eradicate years of exploitation. Previously, various labour laws had inconsistent definitions of “wages,” resulting in confusion and facilitating unjust practices.
“These labour codes eliminate that uncertainty and ensure fairness,” he stated.
Describing it as a groundbreaking initiative, Dr. Jaiswal noted that over 400 million workers, including gig and platform workers, will now gain access to social security benefits.
“All of them will be covered under ESIC and EPFO. This is a first in independent India,” he added.
The NFITU leader also underscored several provisions designed to promote dignity and equality for women in the workforce.
“The new codes guarantee equal pay for women and eliminate gender-based discrimination. Moreover, night shifts will only be permitted with a woman worker’s consent, and both the government and the employer will be accountable for her safety,” he elaborated.
According to Dr. Jaiswal, the labour codes specify that any work exceeding 48 hours per week will entitle a worker to double overtime wages. The codes also require free health check-ups for all workers over the age of 40, a policy aimed at enhancing long-term worker health and workplace safety.
Dr. Jaiswal claimed that these reforms will position India at global standards in labour governance. “These labour codes will not only align India with global labour norms but also allow us to exceed many of them,” he stated.
He expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Labour & Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for their visionary leadership, asserting that these reforms signify the dawn of a new era of worker justice and dignity in India.
