New Delhi, Nov 22 (NationPress) The Confederation of Central Trade Unions (CONCENT), a coalition of 14 national labour organisations, has expressed robust support for the Union Government’s newly introduced Labour Codes, deeming them a “historic and progressive transformation” that will benefit nearly 40 crore unorganised workers.
In a comprehensive joint statement, CONCENT asserted that the four Labour Codes replace “fragmented, outdated colonial-era laws” with a cohesive, transparent, and worker-centric framework that aligns with the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The unions commended the “universalisation of social security” as a significant milestone, pointing out that unorganised labourers, gig and platform workers, migrant workers, and those in informal sectors will now enjoy statutory social protections, including “ESIC-type healthcare, pension-linked benefits, disability assistance, and maternity protection.”
They also emphasized reforms such as mandatory written appointment letters, legally enforceable minimum wages, the expansion of digital wage systems, and enhanced safety standards, which include annual health check-ups and workplace safety committees.
The unions asserted that these initiatives enhance worker dignity, mitigate exploitation, and foster industrial harmony. CONCENT called for public awareness, urging all stakeholders to “communicate the reality to the working class” and organise meetings, marches, and conventions advocating for the Labour Codes.
Leaders from BMS, NFITU, TUCC, HMKP, INTUC, NLO, FFR, AIBEU, ESCI, HMKU, KLU, NFFW, BRMGSU, and FSUI endorsed the statement.
The introduction of the new Labour Codes signifies a transformative moment in India's labour scenario—one that harmonizes worker welfare with enterprise efficiency, as indicated by government data released on Friday.
The four Labour Codes comprise the Code on Wages, 2019, the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Social Security, 2020, and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
This historic reform streamlines compliance, modernizes outdated provisions, and establishes a simplified, efficient framework that advances ease of doing business while safeguarding workers’ rights and welfare.
The empowerment of labour is fundamental to a prosperous, Aatmanirbhar India.
