New Delhi, Nov 22 (NationPress) The announcement by the Union government for the prompt rollout of four innovative Labour Codes has effectively merged 29 outdated, colonial-era regulations into a streamlined, contemporary framework that focuses on worker welfare while stimulating growth in the manufacturing and service sectors, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) on Saturday.
The Association emphasized that this long-anticipated overhaul will improve ease of doing business, provide enhanced social security, and drive India towards the goal of becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Additionally, these reforms will establish greater predictability regarding labor policies for both workers and businesses.
The Labour Codes are designed to ensure a workforce that is secure, empowered, and highly productive—a necessity for India’s aspirations to become a global leader in manufacturing and innovation, as noted by the Association.
These reforms strike a balance between strong worker welfare and sustainable industrial growth, aligning India’s labor framework with international standards.
“India’s new Labour Codes represent a significant advance towards a modern, efficient, and globally compatible labor ecosystem. For the IT and electronics sectors, these reforms promise enhanced social security, operational clarity, and a more stable workforce environment—key elements that will boost productivity and support long-term competitiveness,” stated Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of ICEA.
The reforms notably promote increased participation of women in the workforce, flexibility in working hours, improved worker benefits and protections, and the inclusion of gig and platform workers under labor laws.
These codes advocate for the employment of women across various establishments and shifts, mandating equal pay for equal work, safety measures, and maternity benefits. The provision for women to work night shifts in all establishments aims to foster self-reliance among the Indian female workforce.
The new regulations limit working hours to a maximum of 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week, with overtime compensated at double the usual rate for hours exceeding standard working times. They also require the issuance of appointment letters, set minimum wages, ensure timely wage payments, provide social security and health care benefits, and adhere to international occupational safety standards, all aimed at enhancing productivity and workforce well-being.
