Kannur (Kerala), March 14 (NationPress) Following the establishment of the CPI-M's new state Committee and state Secretariat in Kerala on March 9 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, attention has shifted to the upcoming appointment of the next Kannur district Secretary.
Kannur, the home turf of Vijayan and several senior CPI-M leaders, holds the distinction of having the largest number of party activists, making the role of district Secretary critically important.
The recent state unit committee includes 17 newcomers among its 89 members and 17-member state Secretariat, all closely aligned with Vijayan.
The current district Secretary, M.V. Jayarajan, has been included in the Secretariat, prompting the need for a new district Secretary position.
Names circulating for consideration include P. Jayarajan, former legislator T.V. Rajesh, Vijayan’s political secretary P. Sasi, and potentially P. Sukanya as a wildcard candidate.
While Vijayan has skillfully managed the committee selections, it remains to be seen if he can navigate the upcoming Secretary choice smoothly, especially since P. Jayarajan, a well-known figure in Kannur, has expressed dissatisfaction at not being appointed to the Secretariat while his junior, M.V. Jayarajan, was.
Though P. Jayarajan has not publicly aired his grievances, a social media post from his son indicated underlying discontent, particularly as he nears 75 and feels this may be his last opportunity to join the Secretariat.
A political analyst noted that Vijayan has reaffirmed his status as the dominant figure within the CPI-M, indicating he will likely suppress any dissent.
"With the party firmly under his control, it is improbable that P. Jayarajan will be appointed as the new district Secretary," the analyst stated.
As Vijayan approaches his 80th birthday in two months, being the only CPI-M Chief Minister in India, he has been granted an exemption from the age limit, allowing him to remain in the Politburo as long as he holds the Chief Minister position, while others must retire from party roles at 75.
