Srinagar, Nov 2 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has granted approval to the J&K government for the construction of a cable car project in Baisaran, located in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, as reported by officials on Sunday.
The go-ahead for the cable car initiative in Baisaran meadow was postponed due to a tragic terrorist incident that occurred on April 22, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local pony owner, at the hands of Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives.
J&K had sought the NIA's endorsement, as the agency is currently investigating the attack that claimed the lives of these individuals, primarily tourists.
NIA representatives stated that the union territory administration reached out for their opinion on the project.
“We were consulted regarding our stance on initiating the cable car project, and we indicated that we have no objections from an investigation perspective,” the officials stated.
On October 27, in response to a question raised by Pahalgam MLA Altaf Ahmad Wani in the Assembly, the government confirmed that a company has been assigned the project, although work has not commenced “due to the post-Pahalgam situation.”
The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) has identified the alignment for the 1.4-kilometer project.
“The lower terminal will be situated near Yatri Niwas in Pahalgam, while the upper terminal will be positioned in Baisaran. The entire project spans a length of 1.4 kilometers. The land required, approximately 9.13 hectares, is under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department,” noted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who oversees the tourism sector, in a written response indicating that the JKCCC has initiated the tender process to engage a consultant for a detailed project report and tender documentation for the project.
The tenders have been finalized, and work has been awarded to a qualified agency, Ronmas India Pvt. Ltd. An official agreement has been executed between the JKCCC and the executing agency.
Nonetheless, the agency has been unable to proceed with its tasks due to the prevailing situation in Pahalgam, as stated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The executing agency has requested permission to access the site for topographical and geotechnical assessments.
“The request for site visit approval has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, who has been instructed to coordinate with the NIA,” he added.
According to the tourism department, the project is projected to cost between Rs 100-120 crore, with an anticipated completion timeframe of 18 months.
