Will a Memorial be Established for Pahalgam Terror Victims in Baisaran?

Srinagar, May 28 (NationPress) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has declared that a memorial will be constructed to honor the 26 victims of the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran meadow, Pahalgam. “This has been a topic of discussion since the beginning - we will establish a memorial in Baisaran for the 26 innocent lives lost, serving as an enduring tribute and a reminder of their legacy,” the Chief Minister stated.

Speaking to a gathering of travel and tour operators from across the nation, the Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of revitalizing tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

During a cabinet meeting in Pahalgam, he mentioned that the Public Works Department has been given the green light to provide in-principle approval for this memorial.

He indicated that feedback will be sought to ensure the memorial is both striking and respectful.

Expressing deep appreciation to the visiting tour operators, the Chief Minister stated, “I am grateful to each of you for your presence in Pahalgam and your commitment to revive tourism. Many of you have played a crucial role in reigniting tourism in the Valley during its toughest times – when even locals hesitated to step outside.”

While recognizing the ongoing security challenges, CM Omar Abdullah emphasized the necessity for stringent measures.

“We may not have complete control over the security apparatus, but what transpired should never have occurred. We must do everything within our power to prevent it from happening again,” he asserted.

Regarding the reopening of tourist hotspots following the Baisaran incident, he encouraged locals to communicate openly and transparently with tourists.

“Instead of dwelling on what’s closed, let’s focus on what’s open. I believe it’s better to be truthful than to mislead tourists,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister assured tour operators that their input would be valued throughout this initiative.

“Together with the administration, we will ensure that destinations are reopened responsibly and timely,” he added.

On attracting international tourists, the CM noted, “From our experience, international visitors tend to arrive after we see signs of recovery in domestic tourism. The first indicator of normalcy is when school children and local tourists begin visiting picnic spots again.

“Once we witness this trend, international bookings will follow. While it’s crucial to promote globally, a strong emphasis on domestic tourism will create the right momentum,” the CM expressed.

Tour operators who engaged with the Chief Minister represented a broad spectrum of travel operators and organizations. Media delegates from national print and electronic outlets also interacted with the CM, along with local tour operators, hoteliers, and tourism stakeholders.
