Key Takeaways
Seoul, March 17 (NationPress) South Korea's Ministry of National Defense has confirmed that it has not received any formal request from the United States regarding the deployment of warships to the Middle East. Minister Ahn Gyu-back made this statement on Tuesday, following US President Donald Trump's recent appeal for allies to send vessels to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz.
During a parliamentary session, Ahn addressed Trump's renewed call on Monday for South Korea, Japan, and other allies to participate in US efforts to secure this critical shipping lane. He noted that the US has historically provided security support to these nations, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Responding to inquiries from lawmakers, Ahn emphasized that the defense ministry has yet to receive any official communication, adding that he does not view Trump's social media posts as an official request.
While he acknowledged that the ministry has conducted various internal discussions prior to any official request, he indicated that the specifics of those discussions are not yet ready for public disclosure.
Ahn pointed out that any decision regarding deployment must take into account national interests, public safety, constitutional considerations, and legal frameworks, which would also necessitate parliamentary approval.
Additionally, the defense chief reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to maintaining military readiness against potential scenarios arising from the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
"Moving forward, our military will ensure a robust readiness posture against all conceivable situations," he stated at a parliamentary defense committee meeting, referencing what he described as escalating military confrontations throughout the Middle East.
He also highlighted that while ensuring the safety of military personnel deployed abroad, the defense ministry continues to enhance its surveillance activities concerning North Korea in close collaboration with the United States.
Last week, South Korea successfully executed "Operation Desert Shine," which involved bringing home 204 nationals from Saudi Arabia using a military transport aircraft.
