Kolkata, Oct 6 (NationPress) As the crisis continues to unfold in the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions of North Bengal due to heavy rainfall and recurrent landslides over the past few days, the District Magistrates from these areas have been granted an exemption from attending an important meeting at the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office on Wednesday. This meeting was intended to assess the state’s readiness for the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s special intensive revision.
According to a source from the CEO's office, alongside the District Magistrates, who also serve as District Electoral Officials, their subordinate staff assigned electoral responsibilities have also been excused from the meeting.
It has been arranged for the central ECI team and the state CEO to conduct a virtual meeting with these District Magistrates and their subordinate officials later in the month, once the situation stabilizes in the affected districts.
“The District Magistrates and other administrative personnel from the North Bengal districts have been relieved from the meeting to allow them to focus on post-disaster operations, including rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts,” revealed the insider from the CEO's office.
The meeting at the CEO's office on Wednesday will be presided over by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, who is expected to arrive in Kolkata on the evening of October 7, accompanied by the ECI’s Director General for Information Technology and other senior officials.
On October 8, the significant review meeting is set to commence at 10 a.m. The following day, October 9, the senior ECI officials are anticipated to visit specific districts to engage directly with local electoral officials.
As of Monday morning, the official death toll from the rain and landslides has risen to 23, based on reports from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and district authorities in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to travel to North Bengal later today to assess the situation firsthand.
In Kolkata, the Raj Bhavan has established a rapid response cell within the Governor’s House to promptly address the urgent needs of individuals and tourists stranded in the disaster-affected areas.
