New Delhi, July 13 (NationPress) Thanks to improved data systems, expanded district coverage, and enhanced state engagement, the 2023-24 edition of the NER District SDG Index presents a more nuanced and dependable overview of the developmental trajectory in India's Northeastern Region.

The latest index reveals significant advancements in various sectors. Every district in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura has now attained 'Front Runner' status.

Hnahthial in Mizoram stands out as the leading district in performance. States such as Nagaland and Tripura demonstrated a well-rounded and robust performance across different goals.

When compared to the inaugural edition, the share of districts categorized as Front Runners has surged from 62 percent in 2021-22 to 85 percent in 2023-24.

This enhancement is attributed to national flagship initiatives, improved localization efforts by states, and saturation campaigns under programs like the Aspirational Districts Programme.

Launched on July 7 by NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDoNER), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this marks the second edition of the index, building on the first report released in August 2021.

This updated edition evaluates the performance of districts across eight northeastern states against 15 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It encompasses 121 out of 131 districts, an increase from 103 in the first edition. The data quality for this index has also enhanced, utilizing 84 indicators41 sourced from central databases and 43 from state resources—indicating improved coordination and reporting.

The Sustainable Development Goals, established by the United Nations in 2015, seek to alleviate poverty, enhance healthcare and education, ensure access to clean water and employment, and cultivate a more equitable world by 2030.

In India, NITI Aayog spearheads the national initiative, aligning these global objectives with government programs and working in close collaboration with all ministries.

The UN team in India aids the process by promoting inclusivity and robust financial support.

The index not only ranks districts but also sheds light on gaps, challenges, and disparities, both within and between states.

Its goal is to foster competitive federalism, bolster local planning, encourage peer learning, and enhance data systems.
