Chennai, Jan 14 (NationPress) Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has put forward its candidate for the upcoming Erode East by-election, set for February 5.

NTK leader Seeman has officially named M. K. Seethalakshmi as the party's representative to challenge DMK's V.C. Chandrakumar.

The election will witness a direct rivalry between NTK and DMK, as main opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, such as AIADMK, DMDK, and the BJP, have declared their decision not to participate in the by-election.

On January 11, AIADMK cited the DMK's supposed misuse of government resources, along with intimidation tactics, from previous elections as their reasons for withdrawal.

Following suit on January 12, the DMDK and the BJP-led NDA also stepped back, with BJP state president K. Annamalai accusing the ruling party of potential government resource misuse.

In a recent announcement via his official X account, Seeman expressed, "The by-election for the Erode East Assembly Constituency in Tamil Nadu will occur on February 5, 2025. It gives me great pleasure to declare that my esteemed sister, M.K. Seethalakshmi, who possesses a Master's degree and M.Phil., will be our candidate for the Naam Tamilar Katchi."

He called upon all party members and leaders to provide full backing to Seethalakshmi, stating, "I earnestly appeal to all state, zonal, district, and constituency-level office bearers, along with all party wings and Naam Tamilar members, to work together to secure victory for the Naam Tamilar Katchi in the Erode East by-election."

On January 11, DMK revealed its policy propaganda joint secretary, V.C. Chandrakumar, as their candidate for the bypoll under the banner of the INDIA coalition that it leads in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, K. Selvaperunthagai, head of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, confirmed that DMK would contest the bypoll on behalf of the alliance, even though Erode East is traditionally a Congress seat.

Vote counting for the by-election will occur on February 8.

This by-election was necessitated by the passing of veteran Congress leader and MLA E.V.K.S. Elangovan on December 14, 2024, at the age of 75.

Elangovan, a grandnephew of the Dravidian icon Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, had been elected from Erode East in the 2023 by-election following the death of his son, Thirumagan Everaa, who represented the constituency and passed away on January 4, 2023, at the age of 46 due to a heart attack.
