Bhubaneswar, March 16 (NationPress) During the voting for four Rajya Sabha seats, a significant controversy erupted as the opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) raised substantial concerns regarding Brahmagiri MLA Upasna Mohapatra's ballot. It was reported that she received a second ballot after allegedly making an error while casting her vote.

The incident occurred when Mohapatra reportedly overwrote her ballot due to an issue with the ink. Concerned about the potential rejection of her vote, she requested a second ballot from the election officials.

This request was met with immediate objections from BJD and Indian National Congress representatives who were present, leading to a temporary halt in the voting process.

Addressing the media outside the Assembly, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik stated, "The MLA from Brahmagiri made a clear mistake while casting her vote. However, the officials in the voting room illegally accepted her vote and issued another ballot paper, which is in direct violation of democratic principles and electoral regulations. We firmly oppose this. Despite some of our members voicing concerns, they are being disregarded, which undermines the democratic election process."

In response, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected these claims, asserting that no rules were broken during the voting. The party maintained that Mohapatra's vote was legitimate.

“According to the established guidelines, a voter can request a new ballot if the original one has not been shown to the agent. Initially, BJD and Congress agents protested, but after reviewing the rules, they permitted her to vote,” stated BJP MLA Prakash Chandra Sethi.

Sethi expressed confidence that BJP candidates Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar, along with independent candidate Dilip Ray, will emerge victorious in the Rajya Sabha elections.

The polling for four Rajya Sabha seats in the Odisha Assembly continues amid rumors of cross-voting by various leaders from both the BJD and Congress.

Point of View

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in Odisha's political landscape. The allegations of irregularity in the voting process raise critical questions about electoral integrity, reflecting the broader challenges faced by democratic institutions in maintaining transparency and fairness. Both sides present compelling arguments, but the focus must remain on upholding democratic norms.
