Bhubaneswar, March 1 (NationPress) Odisha's Director General of Police, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, announced on Sunday that Balangir and Bargarh have been officially recognized as LWE-free districts following the surrender of 15 Maoists from Chhattisgarh.

The local police noted that this achievement represents a significant milestone in the state's ongoing efforts against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). The surrender took place during a special event in Mahasamund district, which borders Odisha's Bargarh district.

According to police reports, the individuals who surrendered were previously active in the Bargarh–Balangir–Mahasamund region. The surrender of these 15 Maoists has led to the declaration that both Bargarh and Balangir are now free of Naxal activities.

“The success results from enduring joint operations over time, precise intelligence, coordinated teamwork between Central and state security forces, and active support from local communities,” stated DGP Khurania.

He commended the police force for their bravery, discipline, and commitment, congratulating all officers and staff involved in the operations while expressing appreciation to the public for their trust and continuous backing.

Khurania also mentioned that similar intensified measures will persist in other areas impacted by LWE to ensure a prompt resolution to the Naxal threat.

Previously, the Odisha Police had declared Malkangiri, Koraput, Boudh, Nuapada, and Nabarangpur as LWE-free.

In a notable shift, villagers in regions once dominated by Maoist influence in Odisha have recently dismantled memorials erected by the Maoist organization, indicating a changing security environment.

As the deadline for the complete eradication of LWE approaches, Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, indicated on February 23 that approximately 40 Maoists remain active across various regions of the state.
