Ray also highlighted a stark urban-rural divide within the state. Rural inflation in Odisha stood at 5.90%, significantly higher than the urban rate of 4.47%, suggesting that price pressures are falling disproportionately on the state's agrarian and lower-income population.

According to the BJD, the elevated inflation has translated directly into sharp price increases for everyday goods including sugar, onions, and edible oil. Ray alleged that consumers across the state — particularly those in rural areas — are facing "immense hardship" as a consequence. BJD Targets Food Supplies Department

The opposition trained particular fire on the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department, which Ray described as being in the "worst state of affairs" among the state government's 42 departments. He alleged the department is "sitting idle with its hands tied" at a moment when Odisha's inflation consistently outpaces the national rate.

Notably, this is not the first time the BJD — which itself governed Odisha for over two decades before losing power to the BJP — has raised the inflation alarm.
