Odisha Man Arrested for Murdering Woman to Evade Rape Conviction

Bhubaneswar, Dec 11 (NationPress) The Jharsuguda Police in Odisha have detained a suspect who, fearing a conviction in a rape case, murdered the victim and dismembered her body to dispose of the remains at different locations, an official disclosed on Wednesday.
The suspect has been identified as Kunu Kisan from the Dharuadihi area in Sundargarh district.
In a statement to the press, Parmar Smit Parshottamdas, the Superintendent of Police for Jharsuguda, mentioned that authorities received a report concerning the victim’s disappearance from her workplace in Jharsuguda on December 7.
Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation by filing a missing report the next day.
He added that subsequent to the investigation, it was revealed through CCTV footage that the victim was seen leaving on a motorcycle with two individuals on the day she went missing.
Moreover, the investigative team was able to identify the suspect using scientific analysis of various clues and telephone records.
According to police reports, Kisan had previously been arrested for raping the victim, who was a minor at the time, on August 27, 2023. However, he was released on bail from jail on December 4, 2023.
During this period, the victim had moved to her uncle’s home in the Badamala area of Jharsuguda district, where she found employment at a beauty salon.
Reportedly, the victim was set to testify against Kisan on December 15, 2024. Fearing a conviction in the rape case, the suspect devised a plan to eliminate her.
“The accused believed that he would undoubtedly be convicted in the rape case if the victim testified in court. Therefore, he concluded that killing her would guarantee his acquittal. He carefully orchestrated his plan to evade capture after committing the crime,” stated the Jharsuguda SP.
As per the devised plan, Kisan first persuaded the victim to accompany him, then procured a knife, altered the motorcycle's nameplate, and took other measures to avoid arrest. On December 7, Kisan, accompanied by an accomplice, took the victim to Sundargarh, where he brutally murdered her in a remote area of Lathikata during the night between December 7 and 8, 2024.
Afterward, he dismembered her body and disposed of the parts in various locations near the Brahmani River in Sundargarh.
Based on information gathered during the interrogation, police were able to recover the body parts and the murder weapon.
The Inspector General of Police, Northern Range, Sambalpur, Himansu Kumar Lal, emphasized that the police are committed to expediting the trial and ensuring justice in this sensitive case.
