Odisha Implements Heat Wave Management SOP for Higher Education
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 2 (NationPress) In a proactive step for the summer months, the Odisha Higher Education Department has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) dedicated to Heat Wave Management for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) throughout the state, as stated in an official announcement on Monday.
The directive aims to ensure that institutions are prepared and take necessary precautions to combat heatwave conditions, thereby protecting the health and wellness of students, faculty, and staff.
According to the SOP, colleges and universities are encouraged to hold or reschedule classes, internal assessments, and examinations in the morning hours whenever feasible to minimize student exposure to high temperatures.
Furthermore, outdoor academic, sports, and co-curricular activities are to be limited during the peak afternoon heat. If such activities are unavoidable, they must be conducted with appropriate safety measures and ideally during cooler times of the day.
Institutions are also instructed to ensure the continuous availability of safe and drinkable water at various locations on campus. Sufficient supplies of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) should be readily accessible in classrooms, dormitories, communal areas, and examination halls.
The SOP mandates that all drinking water facilities, including tubewells and hand pumps, undergo inspection and repair to prevent any interruptions in water supply during the summer.
Moreover, colleges and universities are urged to maintain basic first aid facilities to address issues related to heat, such as discomfort, dehydration, and dizziness, with designated personnel available for immediate assistance.
Institution heads are responsible for raising awareness among students, faculty, and staff regarding heatwave prevention strategies, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and recognizing early signs of heat exhaustion, alongside dos and don’ts during extreme heat.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to remind students to carry water while attending classes and exams, as highlighted in the statement.
A formal communication has been dispatched to all State Public and Private Universities, as well as all Degree Colleges under the purview of the Higher Education Department, urging strict adherence to these guidelines.
