Bhubaneshwar, July 19 (NationPress) - Former Chief Minister of Odisha and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik has vehemently criticized the BJP-led government over the disturbing rise in crimes against women in the state. His remarks follow a shocking incident in which a minor was set ablaze by three unidentified attackers in the Balanga area of Puri.
The young victim has sustained 70 percent burn injuries and has been transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneshwar for urgent medical care.
Patnaik expressed his outrage on social media platform X, stating, "I am deeply saddened to learn about the brutal act of violence against a young girl in the Balanga area of Puri District. This attempt on her life occurred in broad daylight, and I categorically condemn this atrocious act."
This incident comes shortly after a tragic case involving a 20-year-old college student who passed away after self-immolating due to the alleged lack of action on her sexual harassment complaint against her college's Head of Department (HoD).
The second-year Integrated B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore suffered 95 percent burns from her self-immolation on Saturday and succumbed to her injuries on Monday at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, igniting widespread outrage and political backlash.
Patnaik remarked, "This incident occurred merely a week after the tragic case of a young girl setting herself on fire in FM College, who was denied justice despite reaching out for help multiple times, and just one month after the horrifying events in Gopalpur."
He emphasized, "These horrifying acts against women are becoming alarmingly frequent in Odisha. They are not isolated incidents of violence, but rather a reflection of a profound systemic failure in governance. The current administration has emboldened criminals, who now operate without fear of retribution."
The ex-Chief Minister stated that Odisha is becoming increasingly unsafe for women due to governmental inaction and political patronage.
"Will the Odisha government finally awaken from its deep slumber and take swift action to ensure the arrest of these criminals? More importantly, will they take steps to prevent such incidents from recurring? The women and girls of Odisha are waiting for a response," he added.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida expressed her sorrow regarding the incident and assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses while promising strict measures against the offenders.
In a post on X, she shared, "I am deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the incident where a 15-year-old girl was set on fire by miscreants in Balanga district. She has been promptly transferred to AIIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar, and all necessary arrangements for her treatment are being made. The government will fully cover her medical expenses."
"The police have been instructed to apprehend the culprits without delay and to take decisive action," she added.
