Bhubaneswar, Aug 12 (NationPress) BJD President and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, expressed profound shock and sorrow over the tragic death of yet another girl who committed self-immolation in the Gaisilet area of Bargarh district.
The victim, a 13-year-old girl residing at her maternal uncle's home in Phiringimal village within the Gaisilet police jurisdiction, reportedly set herself ablaze on Monday, allegedly due to family conflicts.
Villagers discovered her in a severely burnt state at a football ground adjacent to her uncle's residence.
After being rescued, she was promptly transported to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, Sambalpur, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Following the incident, she allegedly informed locals that another girl was a factor in her drastic choice. Consequently, the police have initiated an investigation, registering a case related to this tragedy.
This incident has sent shockwaves across the state, marking the fourth instance of a girl succumbing to self-immolation within a single month.
On his X account, former Chief Minister Patnaik offered his condolences to the grieving family, praying for their strength during this challenging time.
“It is incredibly distressing to witness a heartbreaking trend where our girls resort to self-immolation. Four young lives have been lost in similar circumstances within just one month,” he stated.
Patnaik emphasized that behind each such loss is the unbearable anguish of an Odisha daughter who felt no alternative but to end her life.
“These four tragedies are not isolated cases; numerous girls fall victim to tragic circumstances daily,” he asserted.
Describing these occurrences as indicative of systemic failure, the BJD leader criticized the BJP government for failing to foster a sense of security among girls.
“Their despair transcends personal tragedy. Each incident reflects a failure to heed their cries,” Patnaik remarked, highlighting that the BJP administration's inaction has made the daughters of Odisha increasingly vulnerable.
“For how long will the BJP government allow this heart-wrenching trend to continue?” he questioned.
