Bhubaneswar, July 15 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, expressed profound grief and sorrow regarding the passing of Soumyashree Bisi, a student from Balasore FM College, who tragically succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, on Monday night.

In a moving message posted on X, Patnaik extended his condolences and called for accountability from the authorities who failed to take action despite numerous appeals from the victim.

"I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn about the demise of the Balasore girl student. May Mahaprabhu Jagannath provide infinite strength and courage to her grieving family during this unbearable time,” Patnaik expressed.

The former Chief Minister labeled the incident a result of systemic failure rather than an accident.

"What troubles me most is how a faltering system can take a life. The most painful aspect is that this was not an accident, but rather the result of a system that remained silent and indifferent instead of providing assistance. After a long and painful struggle for justice, the girl ultimately closed her eyes forever," Patnaik stated on his X account.

Patnaik emphasized the bravery of the victim, noting that she had formally reached out to the college principal regarding the sexual harassment she endured. When no action was taken, she sought help from the Higher Education Minister, the Chief Minister's Office, and even a Union Minister. She personally met with the local MP from Balasore to recount her ordeal and seek justice.

"If even one individual had taken personal responsibility and intervened, her life could have been preserved. She did not just die from physical injuries, but because of the state government’s indifference and neglect that left the victim to fight her battle alone. This incident appears to be nothing short of institutional betrayal — a deliberate injustice," Patnaik claimed.

He further urged the Governor of Odisha to ensure that not only the college administration but also those in power who ignored the victim’s repeated appeals are held accountable.

The victim, Soumyashree, a B.Ed student, tragically set herself ablaze after dousing herself in petrol in front of the principal’s office on Saturday due to alleged sexual harassment by the Head of Department, Samir Kumar Sahu. With over 90 percent of her body suffering burn injuries, she was initially taken to Balasore Medical College before being transferred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for advanced treatment.

Upon her arrival, the critically injured student was stabilized with intravenous fluids and antibiotics, intubated, and placed on mechanical ventilation. Despite comprehensive treatment, including renal replacement therapy and all advanced life-saving efforts, her condition worsened, and she was declared clinically dead at 11:46 p.m. on July 14.
